Why is this important?
Building on momentum from our advocacy last year, WAISN will continue pressing for the Unemployment Insurance for Undocumented Workers bill to create and fully fund an unemployment insurance program for undocumented workers in the State of Washington.
Washington’s undocumented workers are the backbone of the economy, providing much of our state’s essential labor in industries like construction, food services, agriculture, maintenance and custodial work, healthcare, and domestic care. However, as the COVID-19 pandemic displayed, there are no safety nets available to undocumented workers when things go awry. Undocumented workers have contributed nearly $400 million to unemployment funds over the past ten years and deserve access to the benefits that they help sustain.
